Problems in our society today.

World military spending reached a record $1,738 billion in 2011 the next year we spent 138 billion more on the military.

We have spent 2 billion dollars on medium extended air defense system (meads).

About 18 percent of projected military spending in the administration's budget.

We are number 1 in the world of spending the most money on our military then China is after us they only spent 114 billion and we spent 686 billion dollars.

for the Afghanistan and Iraq war the taxpayers in the u.s will have to 121 billion dollars.

expert feedback.

1. The Budget Control Act of 2011 established budgetary caps on discretionary spending including military spending, excluding war costs, and proposed additional automatic cuts if Congress failed to approve additional deficit cutting measures. These automatic cuts, known as sequestration, are now scheduled to take effect in a few months. We'll see if Congress and the White House can reach agreement on how, or if, to postpone them. If sequestration goes through, the Pentagon's budget would be about $460 billion for 2013, or about $55 billion less than last year.

War costs have been declining for several years, but we are expected to spend in 2013 about $88 billion in Afghanistan (mainly), and perhaps $50-$75 billion from 2014 to 2016 or 2017. It will depend upon how many troops stay in Afghanistan after 2014, and what they're doing.

2. The money to pay for the wars and the military comes from current tax revenues, or, because the government is spending more than it takes in (deficits), some of military spending is paid for by debt. An easier way to think about that is simply future taxes. (i.e. you!)

3. If we cut our military to about what we were spending in the mid-1990s (around $400 billion in today's dollars) we would still have the most powerful military in the world, by a factor of five or ten. We would still be spending about three times what the Chinese spend, our next closest competitor in terms of spending. And many of the other big spenders in the world are American allies (for example, United Kingdom, France, and Japan). So I think that we would still be quite safe and secure. I also think that the military spending cuts, though painful in the short term for some communities, would lead to more productive activity in the future. That is largely what happened in the 1990s.

Defense (Pentagon) 686 billion
Health/HumanServices Dept. 81 billion
of Education Dept. 68 billion
of EnergyDept. 35 billion
of Justice Dept. 24 billion

solution.

We have spent to much on our troops so they are thinking of cutting out troops from 547,400 to 360,000 that would save us 220 billion dollars over the next four years.

We could also reduce the size of the marine corps from 202,000 to 145,000 we would save up to 67 billion over the next 10 years.

solution for rome

Hello roman emperor i'm here to help save Rome. I have some things that you need to do before you spend any more money on your military. You are paying 10,800,000 denarii for your roman soldiers that is way too much. Out of the tax money you get you take 50 percent of that money and spend it on the military. I have some ways I can give you some ways on how to cut down on your military spending and saving your empire. You have 6,000 men in each legion If you cut down the men to 5,000 instead of 6,000 you would save $18,000,000. That is still a reasonable size army to fight off the enemies. You should also cut down on the weaponry because you spend 173 denarii and that is for each person that in total is 1,038,000 denarii and that is also way to much. instead of using all of those weapons each person should only get 2 weapons . That would cut the military expenses by a lot. That is the ways we can cut your military expenses.

expert letter .

Christopher Preble

Hello my name is Mitchell Morreale I am a 7th grade student at Nagel Middle school in Cincinnati Ohio. In social studies we are doing a project about how we can save the Roman Empire. I choose the high cost of military and wars. I was wondering if you would have the time to answer a few questions?

1. What laws or measures are being taken to cut down US spending in our wars and military?

2. Where does the money come from to support the wars and military?

3. If we did cut down our military, how would that affect our society?

Thank you for time Mr.Preble
